Adopting a dog, what does it mean?
We ask any potential adopter to think carefully about the responsabilities of caring for pets before deciding to go through the adoption process.
Some people decide to have a dog (or any other pet) without considering the consequences.
What does it mean to have a pet? Do I have the time to spent with my dog? Can I make sure the dog will get all the necessaries it needs, like the proper food, sufficient activity, sufficient attention, medical treatment if necessary, etc. etc....?
These are all questions you have to thibk about before you decide to have a dog.
Before you decide to have a dog make sure you can and will take care of it well !!!
If you really have considered all the consequences and still you are sure you want to have adog then the next step is to think about what kind of dog you want. What are the characters I want to have my dog, what size of dog do I want, what age do I prefer, a young playfull energetic dog or a bit older mature settled-down dog?
If you have kids or other pets then the new dog has to get along with the present family members, so tell the dog shelter what your family situation is.
Abandoned dogs are, in general, no pedigree dogs. But like pedigree dogs they can be very sweet, friendly and obedient dogs. Most of the adopted dogs are very gratefull and happy to have a new home. Off course the new-adopted dog needs a few days or maybe weeks to adjust and to learn what is expected from him/her. As long as you are consequent and patient he/she will learn fast. And in (a bit of) time he/she will be your best friend ever.
Procedure of adopting a dog:
If you are interested in adopting a dog you saw on our website the next step is to contact us for more information and to make an appointment to come and visit us.
We will be happy to give you further details about any particular dog and they can be seen on a one to one basis with a member of our staff. We endeavour to find the correct pet for your needs and may be able to advise you of the suitability of some animals.
It is also possible to take a particular dog out for a walk if you are interested in offering it a home. (Please bring ID with you)
From the many sorts of dogs available it is important to choose a companion that will match your particular lifestyle. Though no dog should be left for more than a few hours, an older dog might be slightly more tolerant. Young dogs usually require more attention and a puppy will need constant attention for feeding, toileting and training throughout the day.
Being intelligent animals all dogs require the mental stimulation of exercise beyond their own home and you should be realistic about the amount of exercise you can provide. Lack of proper exercise can lead to behavioural problems. Larger dogs will not always require more exercise than smaller dogs, but they do need more space.
All dogs need regular grooming and some breeds may require regular professional attention that needs to be budgeted for.
A dog will be your responsibility for many years and may live for 15 years or more. They should never be bought for children whose interests may quickly change as they grow up.
The aim of every dog-rescue and re-homing organization is to find a loving home where the dog will remain for the rest of it's life. Our re-homing procedure will involve a short questionnaire.
A good re-homing centre will try to ensure that your new dog is compatible with your children and any dogs or other pets you already have.
The costs of re-homing including veterinary care are high and like most organizations we will ask for a contribution from you of € 70,- when adopting a dog. For this 70 Euros the dog will get the necessary vaccinations, the passport & the ID-chip and the sterilization of the dog is included.
Interested in adopting one of our dogs, please come and visit the dog shelter between 9.00 and 11.00 hrs, every morning.
